Handicap International seeking Provincial Program Coordinator in Indonesia (2 yrs) PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 February 2008
Handicap International is an international organisation specialised in the field of disability. Non-governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit making, it works alongside people with disabilities, whatever the context, offering them assistance and supporting them in their efforts to become self-reliant. Since its creation, the organisation has set up programmes in approximately 60 countries and intervened in many emergency situations. It has a network of eight national associations (Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA) which provide human and financial resources, manages projects and raises awareness of Handicap International’s actions and campaigns.

Country context: Handicap International is present in Indonesia since January 2005, when it provided an immediate response to the needs of the tsunami victims. This response initially involved teams of physiotherapists working in 7 different hospitals spread over the three areas affected by the disaster (Banda Aceh, Meulaboh, Sigli). Following the return of hospital staff, the support activities were reoriented towards transferring skills and knowledge to these staff and the teachers and students of the province’s two physiotherapy schools. This partnership also enabled Handicap International to develop projects, to reach out to people with disabilities during a first period from February 2005- January 2006 and in a second period from April 2006 up to June 2007. These last period activities have been implemented through the offer by HI Physiotherapists of rehabilitation services (treatments, mobility aids, home adaptation) in 12 Primary health care centres (Aceh Besar, Bener Meriah and Aceh Tengah) and its attached villages.

Further to the activities described above the aims of this project are to:
